Dress warmly and hike the snowy Chemin du Parc-National from the Discovery and Visitors Centre to Pont Banc (8-km hike). This trail runs along the Jacques-Cartier River and features breathtaking views on the surrounding mountains and the Sautauriski River delta.

Chemin du Parc-National is open to vehicles up to the Discovery and Visitors Centre (km 10).

The park has a network of 13 snowshoeing trails totalling up to 94 km. This winter, try the Escapement trail, a 11.2 km loop accessible from the km 10.

The park offers snowshoe rentals (free for children).

Those bicycles, known as fatbikes, are equipped with oversized tires for ideal traction on snowy or sandy surfaces.

In winter, more than 10 km are offered between the Discovery and Visitors Centre and the Pont-Banc to practice this activity.

Fatbike rental is available at the park. Reservation by phone (418-848-3169, ext. 6) between 24 and 48 hours in advance or directly on site if there is availability.

This winter there are several possibilities for backcountry skiing: Chemin de la Vallée (between km 12 and km 33) and the following trails: Draveur Sud, Rivière-Sautauriski, Confluent, Rivière-à-l’Épaule, Voie-du-Bûcheron and l’Incursion.

We remind you that the backcountry skiing trails are not groomed, packed or marked.

Backcountry Skiing

Have you ever had a chance to hear your skis gliding along fresh snow early in the morning before anyone else? You can have just such an experience at the park on the 55-km backcountry skiing circuit. It’s very physically demanding, but this 2-night/3-day adventure is a classic way to experience winter in Québec.

Rent them at the Discovery and Service Centre. Our backcountry skis are equipped with a universal fixation allowing the use of several types of boots. Hok skis are easy to handle and therefore perfect for beginners. Reservation by phone (418-848-3169, ext. 6) is mandatory at least 24 hours in advance.

Skishoes are very versatile, combining the qualities of cross-country skis and snowshoes. The bottom of the ski is partially covered with a climbing skin for uphill traction. It also has a universal binding that fits several kinds of boots. Skishoes are easy to handle and therefore perfect for beginners. They allow faster off-track movement than snowshoes in snow fields. Le Confluent trail is perfect to try this activity.

Elsewhere at Sépaq

Enjoy a range of exciting winter activities at the park, such as alpine touring skiing, telemark skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in three off-trail sectors covering more than 200 hectares!

Sautauriski sector

Located a mere 2.5 km from the Discovery and Visitors Centre in the middle of a mature birch, maple, and cedar forest, this new sector covers more than 45 hectares and features a 200 m incline. And it’s only a short walk away! A heated rest stop is located at the foot of the sector.

Belleau Sector

Located close to the Discovery and Visitors Centre on the west bank of the Jacques-Cartier River, this off-trail sector covering 100 hectares (1 km²) features a 300-metre elevation. The sector can be accessed from the Discovery and Visitors Centre parking lot by crossing the Belleau bridge.

Matteucie Sector

Located 7 km from the Discovery and Visitors Centre, this more remote sector of the Park is sure to impress with mature birch stands, wild surroundings and a continuously rising slope. Covering 50 hectares (0.5 km²) of land, the sector features a 330-metre elevation.

Important!
These sectors require an approach walk, are not maintained or patrolled, but demarcated. They are recommended for initiated people and are not suitable for beginners. In order to practice your activity safely, it is recommended to be at least 3 people and to postpone the activity in case of bad weather conditions. For more advice on mountain safety, consult the website of the Fédération québécoise de la montagne et de l'escalade. We urge you to be careful.

Visitors of all ages are invited to try the natural toboggan hill in the heart of the valley. Guaranteed laughter for the whole family! Departure from Pôle Belleau (km 10).

Tubes are provided on site free of charge. It is forbidden to use personal equipment to slide.

Seven snow kicksled are available for rent this winter. Come entertain yourself with your family!

A vast plateau overlooking the majestic valleys of the Jacques-Cartier, Chute and Sautauriski rivers, the backcountry of Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is found in a boreal forest, where moose is king.

Summer

On the plateaus of the Sautauriski River, adventure lovers will discover a 350 km2 territory that can be reached on foot or by mountain bike. The altitude varies between 700 m and 900 m.

The heads of Jacques-Cartier and Sautauriski Rivers are accessible to advanced whitewater canoeists and kayakers.

Winter

A 430 km2 territory can be reached on snowshoes, or backcountry, alpine touring or telemark skis. The altitude varies between 700 m and 900 m. Roads, old logging trails, summer trails and waterways are the most popular travel routes.

Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, here’s a great way to discover the dazzling scenery of the Jacques-Cartier Valley. The kayaks for rent at the park are of the open “sit-on-top” variety, which are easy to board and disembark. The more flared shape of their hulls and their width makes them stable. Note that the wider tandem kayak is even more stable. The capacity for this kayak is 2 people for the tandem kayak and 1 person for the solo kayak.

Calm water rental

In groups or with the family, the miniraft is a popular way to explore the most active part of the river.  With its unsinkability, stability and simplified approach to white-water techniques, this watercraft is great for everyone, including children five and older. It’s big enough to offer plenty of space for carrying daypacks and a picnic. However, it is not as fast in calm water. The capacity is a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of 7 people with a daypack and a small cooler.

A dinghy is an inflated watercraft midway between a canoe and a raft. These unsinkable vessels have been designed to travel down extensive sections of rapids. In the calmer waters of the park, they offer a good compromise between thrills and safety.

Ride through the Jacques-Cartier river on a stand up paddle board. Hawaiian in origin, stand up paddling is an activity that combines surfing and kayaking. This board, designed for calm water, is longer, wider and thicker than standard surfboards designed for waves, and therefore more stable.

Only a short segment of the river without rapids is accessible for stand up paddle surfing. Standing on a big surfboard, paddle in hand, you can test your balance. It’s fast and easy to learn, and it’s guaranteed fun! We recommend that you rent the equipment for an hour. Rental includes the board, the paddle, and a life jacket.

To relive the ambiance of fishing camps from the early 20th century, reserve a fishing stay with accommodations. Best pick: the Devlin cabins (5) or the renowned Lac à l'Épaule Lodge! They sleep 4 to 14 people and offer a very attractive fishing plan.

Book

You can fish for speckled trout on Rivière Jacques-Cartier (prohibited on other rivers and streams) and on some designated lakes in the l'Épaule, Jumeau and Sautauriski sectors.

In the Vallée sector, only fly fishing is allowed on Lac Cook. You could also catch a young salmon in Rivière Jacques-Cartier. It must be returned to the water, as salmon fishing is prohibited in the park.

To practice fishing in the park, you must obtain and carry with you at all times:

1. Provincial fishing licence (and photo ID)
2. Right of access for day fishing (specific to national parks)

Period: May 16 to September 7, 2025 or until the annual catch quota is filled.

NOTE: Go online to purchase your park entry pass and right of access for day fishing. It's mandatory to declare your catch after each day  of fishing (declaration station at the Discovery and Visitors Centre and at the gate) by filling out the declaration form.

Three mountain bike trails will show you the park's splendours. You have at your disposal over 30 km of trails, ranging in level from easy to very difficult.

The forests and bodies of water in Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier are home to a wide variety of plant and animals, which with a little patience and attention, can be spotted.

Québec’s 3 big cervidae share the territory. The moose is king of the Jacques-Cartier River valley. Whether you’re hiking or canoeing, keep your eyes peeled! Hikers often spot families of beavers on the Scotora trail. White-tailed deer, foxes and porcupines are also seen frequently.

Expert and amateur bird watchers are invited to take part in the summer and winter censuses. Over 130 bird species have been recorded in the park. To find out more, call 418 848-3169.

In spring, get your cameras ready and come take a closer look at the undergrowth on our trails, which is dotted with colourful trilliums, yellow trout lilies, and dicentras.

Intrigued by the fascinating world of mushrooms? Join Joël Caux, a park warden and naturalist  specialized in mycology, to learn the basics of forest mushroom identification and classification. As well as learning to recognize a multitude of species, you'll discover an imperceptible underground world where intimate links are forged between trees and mushrooms. Nearly 300 species have already been inventoried in the park: the list could grow with your discoveries!

Laissez-vous guider à travers des passages insolites formés d’immenses blocs rocheux recouverts de tapis de mousses aux milles nuances. Un milieu saisissant et luxuriant, mais aussi très fragile, qu’on se doit de protéger.

Un théâtre de marionnettes au milieu de la forêt, voilà une idée plutôt inusitée. C’est ce que les garde-parc naturalistes vous offrent pour ajouter une touche d’originalité à votre séjour en camping. Nous invitons les enfants et leurs parents à venir s’amuser avec nous.

Nouvelle de dernière heure : un campeur serait en difficulté sur le territoire du parc! Apprenez à vous orienter à l’aide d’un GPS et partez à la recherche d’indices qui permettront à l’agent Jack Carter de résoudre son enquête. Un travail d’équipe qui favorise l’entraide et la coopération.

Filet en main, un garde-parc naturaliste est allé explorer un étang grouillant de vie pour en prélever quelques échantillons. Venez l’aider à inventorier les bestioles surprenantes qu’il a récoltées!

Il sera aussi possible de chercher des insectes dans la rivière de façon autonome. Apportez vos souliers d’eau, une cuillère et un petit contenant. Le naturaliste pourra vous aider à identifier vos trouvailles.

En forêt, nous avons la chance de les entendre et parfois même de les voir. S’agit-il d’un oiseau rare? Est-ce le mâle ou la femelle? À qui appartient ce chant? Avec un garde-parc naturaliste, vous découvrirez les différents oiseaux présents dans le parc. Lors de votre prochaine randonnée, vous pourrez dire : « Ah oui! Je le connais celui-là. »

Youth groups of all ages (day camps, playgrounds, scouts, cadets, youth homes, daycares, etc.) are invited to come and connect with nature a mere 30 minutes from Quebec City!  Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is open year-round for hiking, guided activities, equipment rental, and nature stays, offering young people the chance to explore an extraordinary natural and protected environment through activities that will encourage them to stay active and think.
